Source-to-Pay (S2P)

Definition

Source-to-pay (S2P) is the end-to-end procurement lifecycle covering strategic sourcing, supplier selection, contracting, requisitioning, purchase order, invoice and payment as one continuous process.
  • End-to-end procurement lifecycle from strategic sourcing through payment as one flow.
  • S2P moves the transactional volume; CPM sits above as the financial-truth layer.
  • Structured contract data plus a continuous ERP match turns S2P into a closed loop.

Source-to-pay (S2P) is the end-to-end procurement lifecycle covering strategic sourcing, supplier selection, contracting, requisitioning, purchase order, invoice and payment as one continuous process. In the Contract Performance Management stack S2P sits underneath as the transactional flow, while CPM operates as the layer above that turns the contracted terms into a live financial truth against every posted purchase and payment.

How it works

A source-to-pay stack runs the full procurement lifecycle in one connected flow. Strategic sourcing selects suppliers against a defined category strategy. Contracting captures the negotiated terms into a repository. Requisitioning and purchase order fire against the contract. Invoice and payment close the loop against the receiving record. Each hop carries its own tooling in most enterprise environments: sourcing suites, e-signature, CLM, P2P, AP automation, ERP integrations.

A working system also handles what happens after the payment posts. Every purchase, invoice, and payment matches back against the contract clause that authorised it, so the finance team can see whether the delivered spend reflects the agreed price, rebate, service level, or volume commitment. Structured contract data plus a continuous match against the ERP feed is what turns S2P from a transactional flow into a closed loop that finance can rely on.

Why it matters

S2P moves the transactional volume; the trading agreement decides how much of that volume actually translates into delivered value. WorldCC records 19% average contract value leakage against a 3-7% best-in-class band; a material share of the gap sits above the S2P stack, in unclaimed rebates, missed tier crossings, uncollected service-level credits, and price adjustments never applied. McKinsey puts 3-5% of value recovery on the table when structured contract data feeds the S2P loop, and Aberdeen adds 65% of admin time back on the calendar.

How Vendortell handles it

Vendortell sits above the source-to-pay stack as the Contract Performance Management layer that turns contracted terms into live financial truth. Trading agreements are extracted during onboarding, every clause lives as a machine-readable rule, and each posted purchase, invoice, and payment reconciles against the running earn-rate. See the procure-to-pay (P2P) page for the operational sub-flow, or the Integrations platform page for how the CPM layer plugs into the existing S2P stack. Onboarding runs in 30 days.

FAQ

How is source-to-pay different from procure-to-pay?

Source-to-pay covers the full lifecycle from strategic sourcing through payment. Procure-to-pay covers the operational sub-flow from requisition through payment. S2P is the strategic superset; P2P is the transactional core inside it.

Where does CPM sit relative to source-to-pay?

Above it. The S2P stack moves transactional volume through sourcing, contracting, ordering, and payment. CPM operates as the layer that turns the trading-agreement terms into a live match against the posted transactions in the ledger.

Does an S2P stack replace CPM?

It does not. An S2P stack processes the transactions; CPM reconciles those transactions against the underlying trading agreement. The two are complementary layers: S2P handles the flow, CPM handles the financial truth against the contract.

Which teams own source-to-pay and CPM inside the enterprise?

Procurement and AP own the S2P stack end-to-end. Finance and commercial share ownership of the CPM layer above it: finance owns the accrual and settlement, commercial owns the clauses and the earn-rate. Both feed the same source of financial truth.
